Freiheit in der Bibel und heute? - Freedom in the Bible and today?

Sunday was the last day of our Bible Dialogue on the topic “Freedom”. We were a small but very good group, every one being highly committed and interested in what our conference team had prepared. On the evaluation sheets it was the conversation with the other participants that was considered most valuable – besides the thorough and elaborate preparation by the team – and the comparatively long duration (4 days in Berlin) was appreciated as an opportunity to study the bible in-depth while getting to know one another, as trust can be built from one day to the next.
The conference looked at the idea of freedom in Isaiah, in the Gospels and the letters of Paul, as well as how Martin Luther interpreted the freedom in Christ and how we today see it. We also asked in discussions whether there can be too much freedom or if true freedom may even need limits, boundaries that can be overcome or may be respected freely.
A quote by Nelson Mandela in the first work unit expressed it well for me: When he was released from prison, he is reported to have said that he would only truly be free if he could leave hatred and bitterness behind.
